Contractors should be developing specialist skills
30 June, 2009
The experts have said that freelance consultants and contractors should be developing specialist skills during this time of economical and employment uncertainty.
Freelance consultants and contractors could benefit by building on experience and knowledge, giving them a competitive advantage during the recession. Recent research by EDGE - the independent education foundation - found that 71% of small and medium-sized businesses felt that there were too few people in the job market with practical skills and vocational qualifications.
Dr. John McGurk of the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) agreed with this statement. He urged contractors to update their training continuously, in order to put themselves in better positions once the market picks up. He felt that development through private study, whether by reading or online training, developing more broad competencies like emotional intelligence or project management skills are advisable.
